Met Office daily weather: A mix of sunshine and showers
Friday will bring a noticeable improvement in conditions across much of the UK following a cooler and unsettled week.
Scattered blustery showers are expected in western areas, some of which may turn heavy with a risk of hail and thunder. These showers will gradually spread eastwards from late morning into the afternoon, affecting central and possibly eastern regions. However, some eastern areas will remain largely dry and sunny throughout the day.
Temperatures will be highest in eastern and southeastern England, where values may reach 19-20°C. Elsewhere, particularly in the west and northwest, it will be cooler with highs generally between 15-18°C. Winds will be light for most, though a strengthening breeze is expected in the far northwest later in the day.
Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said: “For Friday, it’s a fine start, the Midlands and a good part of eastern England, seeing a sunny beginning to the day. But, there’ll already be showers in the west. Those showers will develop as we go through mid to late morning, becoming heavy and thundery once more.
“They will zip through because there’s enough of a breeze blowing, but the odd really heavy downpour is possible. And then the sun will pop out maybe 5 or 10 minutes later because that breeze will chase the showers through. It won’t be as wet in northwest Scotland for Friday either.
“There’ll still be some showers, but not the persistent rain we saw on Thursday, and the winds will be a little lighter. There’s still plenty of those showers around if heading out on Friday night. And, if you’re heading away for the weekend, there will be quite a bit of spray and surface water on the roads as the showers just keep on coming.”
During Friday night, showers or longer spells of rain will persist in western areas, gradually spreading eastwards. These will tend to weaken inland across central and southeastern England, allowing for clearer skies to develop. Winds will ease overnight, and isolated fog patches may form in parts of England and Wales. Overnight temperatures will be close to average, with slightly milder conditions in the northwest.
Saturday: Warm sunshine for many, but rain returns later
Saturday is expected to be fine for many, with hazy sunshine and a warm, humid feel. Early mist and fog patches in the southeast will quickly clear, giving way to bright conditions. Scattered showers are possible across the country, with heavier and more frequent showers likely in western areas. These may ease later in the southwest ahead of increasing cloud cover during the evening.
Temperatures will continue to rise, reaching 23-24°C in eastern and southeastern England. A freshening breeze will develop through the day, particularly in the west, adding to the sense of change as low pressure begins to approach from the southwest.
A low pressure system tracks across the Atlantic, reaching the UK on Sunday.

While Friday and Saturday offer a brief respite with warmer and more settled conditions, a return to wetter and windier weather is expected by Sunday as low pressure systems move in from the west. A weather warning is already in place.
