Met Office daily weather: Feeling cooler with showers for some

The start of the week brings cooler air and a mix of sunshine and showers. After a warmer Sunday, temperatures return to near average for early September.

Monday begins with rain affecting Shetland, but this will clear quickly. Elsewhere, showers are expected in western areas, some of which may be heavy with a risk of thunder. These showers will spread and develop over land later in the morning. Despite the unsettled start, there will be plenty of sunny spells, particularly in the east, where many places will remain dry.

Winds will be strong across the northwest, with a risk of coastal gales early in the day. Temperatures will be cooler than Sunday but widely around the seasonal average, with maximum temperatures still reaching the low 20s Celsius in eastern and southeastern regions.

As the evening progresses, showers will become well scattered and retreat to western coasts, leaving most places dry and clear. There is a chance of more persistent rain reaching the far southwest by dawn on Tuesday. Overnight temperatures will fall to mid to high single figures, with some well-sheltered rural areas in the north potentially dipping to around 1–2°C. Patchy mist and fog may develop in places by dawn.

Outlook for Tuesday

Tuesday starts with areas of rain, possibly with embedded thunderstorms, across some southwestern parts. These will gradually break up into showers, persisting for much of the day. Most other regions will see variable cloud and a scattering of mainly light showers, with the chance of a moderate shower near southern coasts.

Cloud and patchy rain may reach the far west by the end of the day. Temperatures will be close to average, with the low 20s Celsius again possible across central and eastern England. Urban areas in the south and southeast may see milder overnight minima of 10–12°C.

Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick, said: “It will be a fresh start towards Monday morning, but a bright one and plenty of sunshine to begin with, especially across England and much of Scotland. As we go through the morning though, we will start to see some daytime heating and some showers will start to bubble up through into the afternoon. Some of these could potentially be heavy, mostly across Wales and the western half of the UK, but the best of the brightest and the best of the conditions will be out towards the east. So temperatures here around 21-22°C which is a little bit lower than what we saw yesterday. But under those showers out towards the west it will feel a little bit cooler, around the high teens for the afternoon.

“As we go through this evening and we start to lose that daytime heating, a lot of those showers will slowly start to fizzle out and we will start to see some drier and a lot clearer conditions as we head towards Tuesday. And with that fresher air mass it will be a much more comfortable night’s sleep as well. Towns and cities will stay towards those double figures, but in some rural spots, we will start to see those temperatures drop towards those mid-single figures for Tuesday morning.

“Heading towards Tuesday morning some heavy showers coming in from the south and they could potentially be pretty blustery as well, especially across the coastal regions of Devon, Cornwall, and the far southwest of Wales. But elsewhere, another dry day to come. Plenty of sunshine. There is going to be a little bit of fair weather cloud here and there and maybe just the odd shower. But again, a mostly dry day across much of the UK. And temperatures again around the seasonal averages. So around 20, 21 or 22°C, especially towards the southeast where they do have the best of that sunshine.”
