A band of cloud lingering across southern England and Wales will continue to drift southwards through Monday, gradually breaking up to leave brighter conditions. Once this cloud clears, most areas will enjoy plenty of sunshine along with light winds, making for a pleasant summer day.

Elsewhere, the majority of the UK will remain dry, although a scattering of showers is expected across north-east Scotland. It will also be somewhat breezier here compared with the rest of the country.

Temperatures will vary across the UK, with the warmest conditions in southern areas. Further north, particularly across northern Scotland, it will feel noticeably cooler under the influence of the fresher airflow.

Most places will stay dry overnight, with long clear spells developing as any remaining daytime cloud melts away, particularly across southern parts of the UK. The combination of clear skies and light winds may allow a few patches of mist or shallow fog to form by dawn.

Further north-west, cloud will begin to increase across the far north-west of Scotland, where there is also the chance of some patchy rain later in the night.

Outlook for Tuesday

Tuesday is expected to be another largely dry and sunny day for much of the country, with many areas seeing prolonged periods of sunshine from morning through to evening. Temperatures will continue to rise, making it feel warm or very warm for many inland locations.

The exception will be parts of western and northern Scotland, where cloud will be more persistent and a little light rain is possible at times. Areas exposed to North Sea breezes may also experience temperatures closer to seasonal averages, preventing conditions from becoming as warm as elsewhere.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Dan Stroud, said: “There is quite a bit of cloud across parts of England and Wales this morning, gradually sinking southwards. While it may be thick enough to bring a little light rain or drizzle over higher ground, such as the moors and the Kent Downs, most places will stay dry and enjoy some good August sunshine.

“It will be a warm day for many, particularly across England and Wales, where temperatures could reach 27 or 28°C. Further north, it will be a little cooler, with highs generally around 19 or 20°C.

“The settled weather continues overnight. Clear skies across southern areas will allow a few mist and fog patches to form by dawn, while cloud remains more persistent across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland. Here, temperatures could fall into the high single figures in some rural locations, leading to a chilly start on Tuesday. Further south, however, it will be a relatively mild night, with temperatures holding at around 15 or 16°C in some towns and cities.

“Tuesday will begin bright for many across England and Wales. There will still be more cloud across northern areas and parts of Scotland, but this should gradually lift and break through the morning, allowing increasingly sunny conditions to develop into the afternoon.

“It will be another warm day, with temperatures reaching 28 or 29°C in the south, while values across the north will also begin to climb. This warm, settled spell looks set to continue through the remainder of the week.”
