Monday will begin with some patchy fog across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland, but this will soon clear to leave a fine day for most areas. Variable cloud and sunny spells are expected across much of the UK, making for pleasant late-summer conditions.

A few isolated light showers may develop near North Sea coasts, though many places will remain dry throughout the day. Across southern areas, especially later in the afternoon and evening, increasing amounts of mid-level cloud are expected. While the vast majority of locations will stay dry, there is a low chance of a few isolated showers developing, most likely in south-west England.

It will be breezy across the south and south-west, with some locally gusty conditions in sheltered areas downwind of higher ground. Despite this, temperatures will be near to slightly above average, with the warmest conditions likely across western and south-western parts of the UK.

Outlook for Tuesday

Tuesday will bring another largely dry day for many, with a mix of cloud and sunny spells across much of the country. A few light showers are possible across north-east England and eastern Scotland, but these are expected to be isolated.

Further south, skies are likely to remain cloudier, with occasional light rain or showers in places. While much of this rainfall should be fairly light and patchy, there is an increasing risk of heavier showers and isolated thunderstorms developing later in the day, particularly across southern and south-western parts of the UK.

Temperatures will remain warm across parts of England and Wales, especially in central and western areas. In contrast, north-eastern parts of the UK are expected to feel somewhat cooler.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Greg Dewhurst, said: "A significant change in the weather is on the way this week. While high pressure is still bringing settled conditions, low pressure will gradually take over, with heavy and potentially thundery rain spreading northwards from midweek. Some areas could see localised flooding, so it's worth keeping up to date with the latest forecasts.

"Monday will be largely fine after a chilly start, with sunny spells for many. It will feel cooler along eastern coasts in an easterly breeze, but temperatures could reach 24 to 26°C in western parts of England.

"Cloud will increase in the south on Monday night, with some showers edging in, before Tuesday brings the chance of showers and thunderstorms across southern England and Wales. Elsewhere, there will be plenty of sunshine, although eastern areas will remain cooler.

"Temperatures could reach 25 to 27°C in the warmest parts of central and southern Britain on Tuesday. By Tuesday night, heavier rain is expected to spread northwards, with the potential for disruptive rainfall later in the week."
