Saturday begins with some early mist, fog and low cloud in places, particularly across southern and eastern areas. However, these should steadily lift and clear through the morning, allowing long periods of hazy sunshine to develop for many.

Light winds will help temperatures rise through the day, with conditions feeling warm or locally very warm in sunnier spots. This will make for a pleasant spring day across much of England and Wales, with dry weather and good visibility dominating by the afternoon.

Further north, particularly across northern and central Scotland, cloud will be more persistent at times. Here, there is a greater chance of patchy rain and a few scattered showers, especially in the far north-west. Winds will be light to moderate, and temperatures closer to the seasonal average compared with the warmer conditions further south.

During Saturday night, a clear split develops between north and south. The far north and north-west will turn cloudier and breezier, with outbreaks of rain and showers continuing.

Elsewhere, clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall, leading to a chilly night. Rural areas may see a sharp frost develop, while mist and fog patches form in prone locations. Later in the night, more extensive low cloud and poor visibility could develop in parts of the south-east.

Outlook for Sunday

Sunday sees a band of cloud and increasingly light, patchy rain moving south-eastwards through the day. Ahead of this, there will be a fine start in some areas, with early frost and fog clearing during the morning, particularly in the south and east.

As the cloud thickens, rain will gradually affect more areas, though amounts are expected to be generally light. Behind the rain band, clearer skies will follow, accompanied by showers, which may turn wintry over higher ground in the north.

Winds will strengthen in northern areas, with moderate to strong winds and gales possible in the far north before easing later. Further south, winds will remain lighter. Daytime temperatures will be around average or slightly mild, rounding off a weekend that captures the changing nature of early spring.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Aidan McGivern, said: “It will be a chilly start to Saturday with some fog patches first thing, but as the fog is fairly shallow, it won’t last long. It should clear within the first couple of hours of the day, leaving extensive sunny spells across England and Wales. Southern Scotland will also see plenty of brightness. Much of Northern Ireland should do well too, although some medium and high‑level cloud will drift in, with thicker cloud persisting across the north of Scotland.

There will be a few light showers in the far north, but nothing heavy or persistent. The breeze will pick up in the north‑west of Scotland, while elsewhere winds stay light. In the sunshine it will feel pleasant, though not as warm as earlier in the week, with temperatures generally between 11 and 14 °C, and a little cooler along eastern coasts due to an easterly breeze.

Into Saturday evening, clear skies across much of England and Wales will allow temperatures to fall, bringing frost and some fog patches overnight. By the start of Sunday, it will be a cold start for the southern half of the UK, with mist and fog quickly lifting through the morning.

Another sunny day follows for many parts of England and Wales, away from the north of England where a weak weather front will bring thicker cloud and some light, showery rain. These fronts will weaken as they run into high pressure. The north of Scotland will clear to showers and a brisk breeze, but nothing particularly significant.

It will be slightly cooler again in the south, with highs around 13 to 14 °C, and feeling colder further north under thicker cloud and patchy rain. Overall, it looks like a mostly fine weekend, with plenty of opportunity to get outdoors, although Sunday will be noticeably cloudier than Saturday.”
