Met Office weather: Cool and changeable with sunny spells and scattered showers
A band of rain moves southwards today, followed by brighter but cool conditions with showers developing more widely from the northwest into tomorrow.
Monday will be a cooler and more changeable day across the UK, as a weakening band of cloud and rain continues to drift southwards through England and Wales. This will bring outbreaks of rain through the morning, turning increasingly patchy and showery as it progresses, with most places seeing it clear by the afternoon, although the far southwest may hold onto rain a little longer.
Behind this front, brighter conditions develop for many areas, with sunny spells emerging. However, a few showers will persist, particularly across northern and eastern Scotland and along North Sea coasts. Cloud will also begin to thicken across the far northwest later in the day, ahead of the next weather system.
It will feel cool for the time of year, especially in eastern coastal areas where a brisk northerly breeze will add a noticeable chill. Temperatures are below average, with a maximum generally peaking at around 15°C to 16°C in the south and southwest, but nearer 10°C in some eastern coastal locations.
Into the evening, most of England and Wales will turn dry with long clear spells developing. This will allow temperatures to fall quickly overnight, leading to a widespread grass frost and a risk of slight to moderate air frost in rural areas. Meanwhile, Scotland and Northern Ireland will see increasing cloud and outbreaks of rain spreading south-eastwards, with breezier conditions developing.
Outlook for Tuesday
Tuesday begins on a chilly note in the south, with a risk of frost under clear skies, while Scotland and Northern Ireland start milder but cloudier with some rain. As the day progresses, another weakening front will sink south-eastwards across England and Wales, bringing more cloud and occasional light rain, although amounts will remain limited.
Behind this, brighter conditions return once again, with sunny spells and scattered showers developing. These will be most frequent and locally heavy across Scotland, where there is also a risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms.
Elsewhere, showers will be more scattered, with a brief lull possible before further showers spread in from the northwest later.
Temperatures will recover slightly compared to Monday, with a maximum of around 10°C to 15°C for most, and isolated values near 16°C in the east. Despite this, it will continue to feel rather cool overall, with breezy conditions developing, particularly in the northwest.
Met Office meteorologist Kathryn Chalk, said: “It's a fresh start this morning in the south and a cold start across Scotland. But in between, we do have a weather front bringing cloud and outbreaks of rain initially across Northern Ireland, then pushing into Wales, into the Midlands and the far east of East Anglia. It sinks its way southwards, turning patchy in nature, so not amounting to too much and eventually reaching the south of England as we head and end Monday evening. To the north though, many places are seeing a good deal of sunshine through Monday. Plenty of blue sky, but it is still feeling cool out there. We have a brisk northerly wind as well. Across eastern coasts in particular, that wind will take the edge off those temperatures.
“As we head through the evening time, there will be plenty of late evening sunshine, some showery outbreaks of rain clearing the south coast. There will be a few showers across East Anglia, but across much of southern England. That's where we hold on to the lengthiest clear skies tonight.”
