Met Office weather: A mix of cloud and sunny spells with showers for some
Friday will see a mixture of cloud and sunny spells with showers for some areas
Friday will begin with outbreaks of showery rain across Northern Ireland and Scotland. Through the morning, this rain will retreat northwards, becoming increasingly confined to far southern Scotland and parts of northern England, where some heavier bursts remain possible.
Elsewhere, the day will bring a mix of cloud and sunny spells. As the afternoon progresses, scattered showers are expected to develop across parts of Wales, the Midlands, northern areas of southern England and eastern England. Some of these showers could be sharp, though many places will stay dry for long stretches.
Temperatures will be slightly higher than on Thursday for most areas, making it feel a little more pleasant where sunshine appears. However, the far north-west will remain cooler, especially under cloud and lingering rain.
During Friday evening, showers will gradually fade for most places, allowing for clearer skies to develop overnight. Some showery rain may persist across far northern England for a time, but elsewhere conditions will become increasingly dry.

With lighter winds and clearer spells, temperatures will fall away overnight. There is a risk of local frost in the north-west, while rural areas further south may see a touch of grass frost. Isolated patches of mist or fog could also form by dawn.
Outlook for Saturday
Saturday will see a more organised band of cloud and rain push southwards across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. Rain may be briefly heavier in places as it moves through. To the north of this band, brighter conditions will develop across northern Scotland, though with scattered showers at times.
Further south, ahead of the rain, there will be some brighter intervals, but this will be accompanied by the risk of scattered and occasionally heavy showers developing across parts of Wales and the Midlands. Later in the day, there is also a chance of elevated showers edging northwards into southern England.
The temperature contrast will be notable, with colder air dominating the north, while southern areas remain relatively warm. Breezier conditions are also expected in the south, adding to a more changeable feel.
Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Deakin, said: “Still a bit of a messy mix tomorrow, with plenty of cloud around but also some sunny spells. We’ll see an increased number of showers, especially across southern counties of England initially, spreading into Wales and the Midlands. One or two of these could be heavy, with thunderstorms possible.

“There will also be a zone of showery rain drifting south from southern Scotland into northern England. It looks drier and brighter for much of Scotland and Northern Ireland, with some sunny spells, particularly in the north‑west. Just a few showers will drift in on the breeze here, which will be bringing down some cooler air.
“Further south, conditions turn a bit warmer where we see sunny spells across the southernmost parts of England, with temperatures reaching 18 or 19 degrees, perhaps even close to 20 degrees. In contrast, northern Scotland will only see highs of around 9 or 10 degrees.
“Elsewhere, sunny spells will make it feel quite pleasant at times, but there will be a few heavier showers developing through Friday afternoon and into the evening, particularly across parts of the Midlands, Wales and northern England. These could bring the odd downpour, before easing away through Friday night and into Saturday.”
