Met Office daily weather: Mixed conditions as we head into the weekend

The latest Met Office forecast is suggesting the weekend will bring shifting skies and varied conditions across the UK.

Saturday will see a continuation of unsettled conditions across parts of the UK. Outbreaks of rain will persist across western Scotland and may extend into parts of north-west England. A band of cloud and rain in the south will gradually clear southwards, although it may linger across south-west England, where locally heavy bursts are possible.

Elsewhere, it will be a rather cloudy day with patchy drizzle, particularly over hills. However, cloud is expected to break to the lee of high ground across central, eastern, and south-eastern areas, allowing for some sunny intervals. It will feel warm in the east, with maximum temperatures reaching 24-25°C, and possibly 26°C in isolated spots. Temperatures will be several degrees cooler than Friday across southern and south-eastern England, though it may still feel muggy due to high dew points. Elsewhere, temperatures will be near normal or rather cool, particularly in the north-west.

Through Saturday night, cloud and rain will gradually clear from the far south-west. The rest of the UK will remain rather cloudy, with further showers or outbreaks of rain and drizzle, particularly in western and north-western areas. Showers will spread across Wales, northern, and central England later in the night. It will be a mild night in the south-east, with temperatures in the mid-teens Celsius, while elsewhere values will be near normal.

Outlook for Sunday

Sunday will bring a mix of sunshine and showers across much of the UK. Some of the showers may be heavy, particularly across central and eastern England during the morning, where there is also a risk of thunder. Additionally, there is potential for a more organised area of rain to move southwards from eastern Scotland into northern England during the afternoon.

It will be breezy in many areas, with daytime temperatures generally near or slightly below average for the time of year.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Burkill, said: “Saturday morning will see a fair bit of cloud and outbreaks of rain pushing their way through. It's always going to be heaviest across western parts of Scotland generally, but a few heavier bursts are possible elsewhere. With the cloud, the rain and some blustery winds, it's not going to be a cold night. In fact, temperatures generally holding up in mid-teens for many places. Nowhere near as warm and as humid as it was earlier on in the week, however, so not too uncomfortable for sleeping.

“Then throughout the day, it is looking quite cloudy. Still quite breezy, blustery in a few places, and there will be outbreaks of rain. We've had so much dry weather recently during the week, it may be a bit disappointing for some that we have then rain arriving in time for the weekend. Lots of plans at this time of year. All the while, eastern areas avoiding the worst of the rain. Likely to stay that little bit drier. Some bright spells developing perhaps across some places as well. But further west, yeah, a damper story.

“Still, some heavier rain for western Scotland and the potential for some heavy rain to push into parts of the southwest. Because of the cloud and the rain and those blustery winds, temperatures for many across England won't be quite as high as they have been. We're looking at mid-20s really at best. Feeling a bit fresher as well. Those temperatures only around average for the time of year. Further north and west, well, feeling a bit similar to recent days.

“Then as we go into Sunday, perhaps a greater chance of some bright or sunny spells developing. The rain looks a bit more showery in nature, so a bit more hit and miss. It's still kind of coming from the west northwest. And so, it's northern western areas where we're going to see the most frequent showery bursts. Towards the east, the southeast, a greater chance of avoiding them, but there will be a few shower bursts pushing through. Still a bit blustery at times.

“So that's going to add to the slightly fresher feel to things compared to recent days. Low 20s looks about as high as we're going to get on Sunday. Some places towards the northwest will be low to mid-teens really. So, definitely a fresher feel here, but the fresher weather doesn't look like it will last all that long. There definitely looks set to be something drier, sunnier, and markedly warmer as we go through next week."
