Met Office daily weather: Starting the week on a wet note before temperatures rise again

Heavy rain is expected early on Monday, gradually clearing from southeastern England by mid-morning. Elsewhere, sunny spells will dominate, although scattered showers are likely, particularly across North Wales and northwest England. These showers may extend further north as the day progresses. Breezy conditions will persist, and temperatures will hover near or slightly below seasonal averages.

Monday night will see a shift to drier conditions for many, though showers in the north will drift southward, concentrating along North Sea coastal counties. Cloud cover will increase in the far northwest later in the night. Temperatures will dip, especially in northern England and Scotland, where locally chilly conditions could lead to a touch of ground frost in sheltered areas.

Despite the cooler start, Monday will feel warmer away from the far northwest and southeast. Temperatures are expected to recover to near average levels, with highs of 23-24°C possible in the West Country and southeast Wales. Nighttime temperatures will remain near average, though northern regions may experience a cooler night.

Tuesday marks the beginning of a temperature recovery across the UK. A chilly start is forecast, particularly in northern and western areas, but the day will be largely dry with sunny spells. Some cloud may build during the afternoon, and isolated showers could affect eastern England. Northwestern areas will see thicker cloud and patchy rain or drizzle gradually moving in. Breezy conditions will continue near North Sea coasts and in the northwest.

Daytime temperatures on Tuesday will be generally near or slightly above average, with highs of 21-23°C in southeastern and eastern Northern Ireland and Scotland. Across England and Wales, temperatures will widely reach 23-25°C, with isolated peaks of 26°C possible from southeast Wales to southeast England, including southern coastal areas as far west as Dorset.

Tuesday night will bring cloudier skies to Northern Ireland and Scotland, with patchy drizzle in the west and far north. Elsewhere, clearer spells will dominate, although western and northern parts of England and Wales may see increasing cloud cover.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Jonathan Vautrey, said: “As we kick off this Monday morning, it is quite bright for many areas of Scotland. A little cool in places with a brisk north-westerly wind. But away from the cloud around coastal districts, there is some sunshine breaking through as well for Northern Ireland. Do watch out for a few showers around North Wales, parts of northwest England. And there is just some heavy rain lingering around Kent and Sussex first thing this morning, but that will eventually be clearing its way off.

“We could see a few showers just skirting eastern coasts of England and maybe a few just bubbling up in land as well. But for many areas, it will manage to stay dry and the sunshine should break through fairly readily, particularly across the north and the west. In that sunshine, it will feel fairly pleasant. Temperatures around average for this time of year, generally 18-23° C. Though with that brisk north-westerly wind still in play for some of us, it could just feel a touch cooler when you do eventually step outside.

“Generally though, it'll be fine and dry as we head into the evening period. Though the odd sharp shower looking like it might develop across parts of northeast England again just skirting their way down a little closer to East Anglia throughout the night. Clear spells though remaining for the vast majority and underneath those clear skies. Again, it will turn quite chilly in locations, particularly for the time of year. Rural parts of Scotland could see as low as low single figures in places, a touch of grass frost even, but generally towns and cities will hold up just in double digits.

“It does though mean despite the chilly start that there'll be plentiful amounts of sunshine to kick off on Tuesday morning. Clouds tending to build a touch more for Northern Ireland tomorrow and western Scotland with some outbreaks of rain arriving here later in the day. And again, there is always the chance that we see a few showers skirting eastern coast of England where the cloud may plague us a little bit more as well. But inland, it'll be another fine day. And with lighter winds in general, that will help make it feel a touch warmer as well.

“Temperatures will be climbing up a little bit more quite widely. 20-22°C likely seeing highs of 24 or 25°C across areas of southern England. Those temperatures though are very likely to be climbing even further as we head throughout the rest of this week. Plentiful amounts of sunshine and day-on-day heating could see us reach close to 30°C in places.”
