Met Office Weekend Weather: Turning unsettled with rain and strong winds for some

A change in the weather is on the way this weekend as high-pressure retreats, allowing low pressure systems and associated weather fronts to move in from the northwest. This will bring a more unsettled spell of weather across the UK, with rain, strong winds, and cooler conditions for many.

Saturday will start markedly different from the end of the working week, with widespread cloud cover and outbreaks of rain, particularly affecting western areas. Rain will be persistent across western Scotland, especially over the hills, following an already wet Friday. With schools breaking up and holiday travel underway, conditions could be challenging in these areas. A yellow warning for rain remains in force for parts of western Scotland due to the risk of localised impacts.

Further south, the southwest of England will also see increasingly wet conditions, with heavy rain likely over the moors. Although the ground here is relatively dry, some localised issues are possible. Strong winds will accompany the rain, making for blustery conditions, less than ideal for those camping or spending time outdoors.

Elsewhere, central and eastern parts of the UK will remain drier, with some cloud breaks developing, particularly in southeastern areas. It will feel humid in the south, with temperatures reaching the mid-20s, while the northwest will feel fresher under the influence of a strong breeze.

Sunday begins on a cloudy note, with further spells of rain across northeastern Scotland and low cloud in places. Elsewhere, showers will be more scattered and interspersed with brighter spells during the afternoon. The southeast may see a heavy downpour or even a thunderstorm due to lingering humidity, but many areas will become drier by the end of the day.

Rainfall totals over the 48-hour period will be highest in western hills, with 25 to 50 mm or more expected. In contrast, central and eastern areas may see little to no rainfall.

Looking ahead, conditions are expected to turn drier and warmer into next week, particularly in the south, as high pressure builds once again.
