Met Office daily weather: A mixed bag as we head into the weekend

Saturday will begin unsettled, with further rain affecting many areas. The heaviest and most persistent rainfall is expected across central and northern parts of the UK, gradually clearing southwards through the day. As this system moves away, there remains a risk of further showers developing, though these are expected to be more scattered and less impactful than those seen on Friday night.

Eastern and southeastern England are likely to fare best, remaining largely dry with sunny spells. These areas will also see the highest temperatures, with values still very warm to locally hot, potentially reaching 27 to 28°C in isolated spots. Elsewhere, it will remain generally warm, though cooler conditions are expected across parts of Scotland, western Wales, and southwest England.

Through Saturday night, rain in the north will gradually clear, leaving most areas dry. However, later in the night, some rain is expected to spread into Northern Ireland. Temperatures will remain warm in the east, while cooler conditions will develop across Northern Ireland and western Britain.

Outlook for Sunday

Sunday will be a generally cloudier day, particularly across northern and northwestern areas, where outbreaks of rain and drizzle are expected. Some rain may also affect parts of Wales and the southwest for a time. Elsewhere, cloud cover will be more variable, with a few isolated showers breaking out later in the day. While most of these will be light, there is a low risk that some could turn heavy in places.

Winds will be light to moderate for most, though locally fresh to strong gusts are possible along exposed coasts. Temperatures will be near average for the time of year, though it may feel locally warm in parts of the east and southeast.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Honor Criswick, said: “Saturday does look like it's going to be unsettled. Outbreaks of heavy thundery downpours pushing their way northwards. Do take care of traveling. It could lead to spray on the, on the roads. Some quite large areas of water could lead to some localized flooding. We could see hail, lightning. But across parts of the south, southeast, also central areas of England, it should be a largely bright afternoon.

“We can't rule out seeing any risk of showers. There is still a chance there. One or two could be heavy, particularly as they drift their way in from the west. But many should see a largely dry afternoon across parts of the south and southeast. But it's still going to be feeling quite warm and muggy. Highs reaching 24, possibly 25°C, but still a degree or two down compared to Friday. But elsewhere across the north, a much fresher day to come.

“Later on, into the evening, we do eventually say goodbye to that system as it drifts its way northeastwards, as we say goodbye to the rain and the risk of thunder and lightning. But notice another feature moving into the northwest. So cloudier here across northwest Scotland, western parts of Northern Ireland. A risk of some light outbreaks of rain as this system drifts its way eastwards. But elsewhere, once again seeing a largely dry and bright day.

“Though once again, there is still the risk of those showers, particularly across central areas moving into East Anglia and parts of southeast England. One or two once again could be heavy with the risk of hail, possibly even some thunder and lightning. But many areas seeing a much better day on the second half of the weekend. Feeling a lot fresher too, particularly across northern parts of England, parts of Scotland. Temperatures in the high teens here. Still just creeping into the low 20s across the southeast, but it's not going to feel quite as muggy as it has done to finish off the week and for the beginning of the weekend.”
