Met Office daily weather: Showery midweek with sunshine ahead
The UK is set for a mixed midweek weather pattern, with showers continuing to affect many areas before a windier and wetter Thursday
The UK is set for a mixed midweek weather pattern, with showers continuing to affect many areas before a windier and wetter Thursday brings further change. However, signs point to a warming trend as the weekend approaches.
Wednesday will begin on a dry and chilly note for many, but showers will soon develop across Wales, the Midlands, and East Anglia, slowly drifting southeast through the day. Additional showers are expected to pop up elsewhere, though these will gradually ease from the west later on. While the south will feel warm, much of the country will remain on the cooler side.
Temperatures on Wednesday will be higher than in recent days, particularly across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Most areas will see near-average values, with the south and southeast of England and the southern Midlands reaching into the low 20s Celsius. A peak of 23°C is possible in parts of southeast England, while eastern and southeastern Scotland may see highs around 19°C.
The jet stream will send several low pressure systems towards the UK this week.

A subtle shift northwards in the jet stream later in the week will result in pressure rising in the south and temperatures climbing into the mid 20s Celsius for some of us 📈 pic.twitter.com/IRkqfgRwel

Wednesday night into Thursday morning will bring a temporary lull, as showers fade and clearer skies develop. However, conditions will soon turn cloudier and windier from the west, with outbreaks of rain arriving during the early hours. This rain is expected to become persistent and locally heavy, particularly over the upland areas of northwest Britain, where extensive hill fog is also likely.
Overnight temperatures will be notably milder than recent nights across Northern Ireland, northern England, and Scotland. Further south, temperatures will be similar to or slightly lower than the previous night, but still relatively mild overall.
Thursday will be a breezy and unsettled day, with outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, especially across northern areas during the morning. Rain will gradually become more patchy and showery through the day, with some brighter spells developing in between. Exposed northern coasts may experience coastal gales. Temperatures will be warm in brighter parts of the southeast, while elsewhere they will hover around seasonal averages.

Here's the latest forecast with Kathryn Chalk 👇 pic.twitter.com/Mu17CrBrqK
Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Kathryn Chalk, said: "It will be a bit of a cloudy start to Wednesday in places. We've got some outbreaks of rain but otherwise for most it's a case of sunny spells and further showers developing. Not everywhere will see those showers and we'll actually see temperatures rising up to 20, possibly 21°C across the south and west.
"Now as we go through Wednesday and into Thursday, that ridge clears and then we have another area of low pressure moving in. We have got a squeeze in the isobars as well, indicating some stronger winds. So turning more unsettled on Thursday with further spells of rain. This time more shifted towards the north, across Northern Ireland into Scotland, where it could turn quite heavy at times. Elsewhere, often cloudy but there will be some patchy drizzle just on and off. Otherwise, a windy day but actually feeling quite muggy. We'll see highs of up to 21 or 22°C."
