Ten Tors 2025: What to expect from the weather

As thousands of teenagers prepare to take on one of Britain’s most demanding youth endurance events, the weather forecast for the 2025 Ten Tors Challenge on Dartmoor promises a mix of sunshine, chilly nights, and increasing winds.

Held annually on the weekend following the May public holiday, the Ten Tors Challenge is a rite of passage for 2,400 young people aged 14 to 19. Organized by the Army’s Headquarters South West and supported by the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, emergency services, and volunteers, the event sees teams of six navigate 35, 45, or 55 miles across Dartmoor’s rugged terrain. Self-sufficiency is key, with participants carrying with them all they need to succeed over two days.

Ten Tors weather forecast

This year’s weather looks set to provide a memorable experience. Thursday and Friday will be dry and sunny, with light to moderate easterly winds and high UV levels. Maximum temperatures will reach 17°C and 18°C respectively, but clear skies overnight will cause temperatures to plummet, potentially as low as -1°C, raising the risk of frost. Participants camping out will need to be well-prepared for the cold.

Saturday will begin chilly but quickly warm up under continued sunshine. Temperatures are expected to peak at 19°C, though strengthening easterly winds may bring blustery gusts by afternoon and evening. Increasing cloud cover later in the day will help keep overnight temperatures above freezing, but the wind chill will still be a factor.

Sunday will start breezy, with gusty easterlies easing into a lighter southeasterly flow by evening. While the day will remain largely dry with sunny spells, patchy cloud may bring isolated showers. UV levels will remain high, and temperatures will hover around 20°C during the day and 6°C overnight.

As the weather promises to add much to the challenge, Ten Tors 2025 will demand not only stamina but smart preparation, and participants will need to be ready to face the elements.

With this year’s weather bringing the full Dartmoor experience, teams need to be ready for it all.  From frosty camps and warm, exposed tors, to sunny days, cold nights, and shifting winds. With the right gear and mindset, they’ll be ready for whatever the moor throws their way.
