Met Office daily weather: A change on the way

Tuesday will bring a noticeable change in conditions across the UK, with cooler air and a mix of sunshine and showers. Early rain across Shetland will gradually clear, while elsewhere, southern areas can expect some sunny spells. Across northern and central parts of the UK, showers will become more widespread through the morning and early afternoon, with a risk of isolated heavy downpours and thunderstorms, particularly during early afternoon.

Showers will begin to ease from the west later in the day, leading to a drier end for many. Temperatures will be lower than Monday, with most areas seeing values close to or below the seasonal average. Southern and southeastern England may still reach the low 20s Celsius, but parts of Scotland will be notably cooler, with highs only in the low teens, around 3-5°C below average. Winds will be less strong than Monday but remain blustery, especially in exposed areas.

A largely dry night is expected across the UK, with long clear periods developing for many. Northern Scotland will remain cloudier, with showers or outbreaks of rain continuing. Temperatures will fall away under clear skies, making it a cooler night than recently. Winds will ease for most, though it will stay breezy in the far north.

Outlook for Wednesday

Wednesday begins dry for most, with early cloud and showers in the far north clearing through the morning. Elsewhere, expect sunny spells, although sunshine will become increasingly hazy from the west as cloud builds. During the evening, outbreaks of rain will spread into northwestern areas, potentially turning heavy at times.

Winds will be fresh to strong in the north and northwest early on, easing through the morning. Elsewhere, winds will remain light to moderate. Into the night, strong winds will return to the northwest, with a risk of coastal gales. Temperatures will be around or slightly above average for the time of year.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Aidan McGivern, said: “We start off Tuesday with further showers coming through on a north-westerly breeze. A blustery day for us all, but the strongest of the winds are pushing away into Scandinavia. They're slowly moderating through the day, although I suspect it will be a breezy day for all. And it's going to be a showery day as well for many northern and western parts of the country. Mostly sunny skies towards the south. Feeling cool in the breeze, but out of the breeze pleasant enough with temperatures reaching the low to mid-20s. Further showers to come later Tuesday, but it does tend to calm down for a time with clearer skies and lighter winds.”
