Met Office daily weather: A bright start but potential for rain and thunder later
A bright start for most but the potential for heavy downpours and thunder later on
Tuesday will begin with a bright start across eastern areas, offering some early sunshine before conditions deteriorate. In the southwest, cloud and rain will arrive early, with some heavy bursts expected. This rain will spread east-northeastwards across Wales and the southern half of England as the day progresses, bringing heavy showers and a risk of thunderstorms, particularly over southern England.
Northern England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland will see a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. Winds will be less pronounced than in recent days, providing some respite from the blustery conditions experienced earlier in the week. Temperatures will be close to or just below the seasonal average for most, with maximum values reaching 20–22°C in the east and south where brighter conditions follow the passage of the front. Elsewhere, highs will generally range from 17–19°C

During Tuesday night, showers will persist in the northwest. Further south, rain and showers will fade during the early evening, leaving clear spells for a time. However, cloud and rain, heavy at times, will redevelop over much of England and Wales in the early hours. Winds will strengthen in the south, with coastal gales possible. The far north will experience a cooler night than previously, while elsewhere it will be a little milder.
Outlook for Wednesday
Wednesday will start cloudy with some showers in the north. A broad area of rain, heavy at times, will spread northeast across much of the UK, eventually reaching Shetland. Behind this, blustery, heavy, and likely thundery showers will follow, with the possibility of hail. Some sunny spells are expected, but showers may become organised into bands, resulting in more prolonged rainfall.
Winds will be light to moderate in the north at first, freshening through the day. In the south, winds will be fresh or strong, with gales mainly affecting coastal areas. Temperatures are likely to be near average or just below for the time of year.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Burkill, said: "A big talking point for Tuesday is a wave of cloud and more persistent rain that's pushing into parts of the southwest. It will have reached Devon and Cornwall by dawn and then it's going to feed its way eastwards a little bit further northwards as well across southern counties as we go through the day.
“Now, this rain could be quite persistent for a time, could be quite heavy as well, and there may even be some rumbles of thunder mixed in as it starts to wrap its way up in towards East Anglia later on in the afternoon. Now, elsewhere, it's again another day of some sunny breaks and showers. The showers look heaviest across parts of northwest Scotland. Here again, there could be some thunder mixed in, so some hail, some lightning, and watch out for those blustery winds.
“Elsewhere, the showers don't look quite as intense or as widespread as the ones that we'll have seen through Monday. Temperature-wise, it's looking fairly similar to Monday. High teens and low 20s. It's really a case of where you get the sunshine that you get the chance of the highest temperatures. So, perhaps across parts of the southwest with the system clearing away and a bit more brightness developing later. That's where we have a greatest chance of getting to highs of around 21 or 22°C. Then there's more unsettled weather to come as we go through the rest of this week. Watch out for Wednesday because we do have a system coming across and that's going to bring some pretty wet and pretty windy weather."
