Weekend weather: Turning cooler with sunshine, showers and a chance of frost

Author: Met Office

The UK will turn noticeably cooler this weekend, with sunny spells, scattered showers and the possibility of overnight frost.

High pressure building from the west will bring plenty of dry weather on Saturday and Sunday, although eastern areas will see some showers and rain may reach the far northwest of Scotland.

After the milder conditions experienced through much of the week, temperatures will return to levels more typical for October, making the weekend feel distinctly fresher.

What will the weather be like this weekend?

For many, the weekend will be cooler, drier and brighter, thanks to high pressure building across the UK.

Saturday will bring plenty of fine weather and sunny spells, but showers are expected in eastern areas. Sunday will follow a broadly similar pattern, with showers continuing in the east while rain and cloud approach the far northwest of Scotland.

Between these areas, much of the UK will enjoy dry conditions with some autumn sunshine.

Will there be frost?

There is a chance of frost in parts of the UK this weekend.

Saturday will begin on a chilly note, with a touch of frost possible across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Some rural areas of England and Wales could also see a touch of frost, although temperatures in most towns and cities should stay a few degrees above freezing.

Saturday night is expected to be colder for many, particularly in the west. Frost could develop across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales. Eastern areas are likely to remain less cold where cloud and showers persist, while the far northwest should also be slightly milder.

What is the forecast for Saturday?

Saturday will start chilly, with some frost and a few patches of mist or fog possible. These are not expected to be particularly widespread.

A few showers will affect eastern parts of the UK during the morning, becoming somewhat more frequent and widespread during the afternoon. However, the showers are not expected to be particularly heavy. There is also a chance of an isolated shower in the far west or southwest.

For many places, Saturday will be a dry and bright autumn day. Scotland should see plenty of sunshine, while elsewhere there will be a mixture of sunny spells and cloud.

Temperatures will be around, or perhaps a little below, average in some areas. After the recent mild weather, though, the change to cooler conditions is likely to be noticeable.

What is the forecast for Sunday?

Sunday will begin with further showers across eastern parts of the UK, while any early mist and fog elsewhere should clear.

Cloud and perhaps some rain will move into the far northwest of Scotland. Between the cloud and rain in the northwest and the showers in the east, however, there will be plenty of fine weather.

Scotland and much of Northern Ireland should see a decent amount of sunshine. A few showers are also possible across northern England, although these are not expected to cause too many problems.

Temperatures will be similar to Saturday and fairly typical for October. Winds will also be light for many, allowing it to feel pleasant in sunny spells, although stronger winds are possible towards the northwest and southeast.

Why is it turning colder?

The change is being driven by high pressure building from the west, while cooler air moves across the UK.

The exact source of the air will change somewhat as the position of the high-pressure changes through the weekend. However, relatively chilly air will remain close to many areas, with somewhat milder conditions reaching the northwest later.

What happens after the weekend?

High pressure is expected to remain influential into the start of next week, meaning conditions will stay largely dry, although some light rain could affect eastern areas and there may be more cloud.

There are then signs of a change from around the middle of next week, with lower pressure potentially bringing wetter and windier weather, especially across western areas. Eastern parts are expected to see less rain and lighter winds.
