User Guides
Users are now able to access a selection of user guides from the main menu. Please note, this is not an exhaustive list, and we will be adding more content in slower time. However, the first release includes useful information to help you create an account and log in, as well as navigate the service and see what customisation options are available.
Lee Waves and Rotors
The Lee Waves and Rotors Forecast is now available to all Helicopter users and can be accessed from the ‘reports’ section of MAVIS.
Liquid Water Content & Route Wind and Temperature
The Liquid Water Content & Route Wind and Temperature products are now available to all Helicopter users for the relevant operating areas. These reports can be accessed from the ‘reports’ section of MAVIS, as separate ‘Liquid Water Content’ and ‘Route Wind & Temperature’ Reports.
Colour States
An alternative method for displaying thresholds in MAVIS has been implemented using Civilian Colour States for the site icons, which will be familiar to many general aviators and helicopter pilots. Users have the option to opt for either RAG or colour states and can customise their view by navigating to the ‘map display settings’ page from the main ‘settings’ area. Colour states can help increase a user’ situational awareness and their ability to assess the suitability of weather for flying using a standardised set of thresholds for visibility and cloud base.
Automatic refresh of MAVIS Data
The map layers and RAG colours used for the site icons, as well as site markers, including aerodrome warning symbols’ now automatically update in MAVIS, without the need for a manual refresh of the page. MAVIS is now polling for fresh data every 5 minutes, meaning that users can simply leave MAVIS on screen with the site icons visible, and/or a map layer selected, and the data will update as time moves on.
UX improvements to 36 hr Aerodrome Table
For customers who have access to the 36 hr Aerodrome Table in MAVIS, some minor aesthetic improvements have been implemented to enhance the user experience and make more efficient use of space on the page. For instance, MAVIS is no longer duplicating information for runways in the crosswind section, as we’ve now rationalised these to reduce the number of rows needed for some airports. The validity time stamp has also been moved to the top right of the page to make further room for the tabular data, to reduce the need for scrolling.
January 2026
Pinned reports
Similarly to sites and map layers, users are now able to 'pin' their favourite reports to the pinned reports list. This will provide users with quick and easy access to frequently used products.
Download PDF/PNG reports
Users can download PDF/PNG reports from MAVIS. These reports include:
UK & European Spot Wind (F214 & F414)
UK & European Low Level Significant Weather (F215 & F415)
North Atlantic Surface Pressure Charts
British Isles Analysis Chart
GAMETs
London CTA Helicopter Report
NATs 24hr LVP Risk (AM & PM)
NATs Convective Risk D0-D1
NATs 0-3hr Trajectory
Triggered Lightning Outlook Forecast
Improvements to Sites Display
To reduce clutter on the base map, additional site toggles have been added to the 'edit map display' page within 'Settings'. Users are now able to hide military sites and sites that do not issue METARs from the base map view. The site icons for sites with limited data are now smaller in size so that those which have both TAFs and METARs are more visible on the map.
Map Legend Improvements
The map legends no longer appear as an 'i' icon on the base map, but instead use a chip labelled 'map key' to make it more intuitive. The legend has also been moved from the left-hand side of the screen to the right, to make it easier for users to compare the colour scale within the legend, to the map layers. This could be particulalry useful if viewing map layers with a large colour scale, like 'Surface Temperature' for instance.

Ballooning Site Specific Forecasts
The Ballooning Site Specific Forecasts are now available to view in MAVIS. Users can click on balloon sites from the base map to view the forecast summary, and from there, select to view either the full forecast or the regional summary. Users can also pin their favourite balloon sites for quick and easy access to forecast data, as well as view additional site information including sunrise and sunset times.
Account Management
Organisations have now been created in MAVIS and approved email domains added to those organisations to enable a bespoke, tailored view of the service for specific users. These users will have been contacted by the appropriate Met Office Account Manager and will notice a pop-up appear when they next sign in, confirming the organisation they have been added to. These users are likely to notice some changes to the products/features they can see as a result of the correct access permissions being implemented.
Users who are members of more than one organisation will have the option to switch between organisations from the menu tab.
Map Layers
Offshore and Search and Rescue Helicopter Organisations are now able to view the Triggered Lightning Map Layer in MAVIS.
