Met Office daily weather: Unsettled with rain and showers

Today will bring a mixed picture across the UK. Scotland will remain breezy with sunny intervals and scattered showers, particularly in the far north where some may turn heavy and blustery. Elsewhere, a dry and bright start will give way to increasing cloud and outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, moving eastwards from the west during the morning.

Parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, and western Wales may see drier conditions developing later in the day. Temperatures will be rather cool for late May, with the highest slightly below average across much of the UK, particularly in Northern Ireland, northwest England, and western Scotland. However, the far southeast of England may reach 19-20°C, with Scotland seeing slightly warmer conditions than on Monday.

Rain will gradually clear eastwards through the evening, with winds easing and clearer skies developing for many. However, showery rain, heavy at times with a risk of isolated thunderstorms, will persist across parts of Wales, the Midlands, and East Anglia. There is also a chance of showery rain moving east across the far south and southwest of England. The far north of Scotland will remain breezy and showery.

Overnight temperatures will be similar or slightly higher than the previous night across Northern Ireland, Wales, northwest Scotland, and southern England. Cooler conditions are expected in northern England and southern and eastern Scotland, where rural areas may see a touch of grass or air frost.

Wednesday will begin dry and chilly for many, with showers continuing across Wales, the Midlands, and East Anglia, slowly drifting southeast. Elsewhere, showers will develop through the day but will ease from the west later. A few moderate showers are possible.

Temperatures will be higher than recent days, especially across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Many areas will see near-average temperatures, with the south and southeast reaching the low 20s, possibly up to 23°C in southeast England. Eastern and southeastern Scotland may see highs around 19°C.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Kathryn Chalk, said: "It's going to be a bright and dry start for many of us on Tuesday morning. There will be some showers still across Scotland but then it's going to be turning wet and windy from the southwest with heavy spells of rain pushing into much of Wales, southwest England, Northern England and then eventually into the Midlands and the Southeast. Perhaps drying up a little bit across Northern Ireland.

“For Scotland though, plenty of sunny spells. There will be a few showers around and it's still going to be quite breezy here as well. Otherwise, in terms of temperatures, ranging from 16 to highs of 17 degrees but probably feeling quite unpleasant underneath these longer spells of rain.

“Now the rain will be heaviest over the hills, especially for the Moors, Exmoor, Dartmoor and the South Pennines. Now that system clears its way through Tuesday night and once that does, we'll actually see a bit of a ridge of high pressure developing by midweek. So, if you have got any outdoor plans, probably the better day of the week ahead.

“A bit of a cloudy start to Wednesday in places. We've got some outbreaks of rain but otherwise for most it's a case of sunny spells and further showers developing. Not everywhere will see those showers and we'll actually see temperatures rising up to 20, possibly 21 degrees across the south and west.”
