After a spell of notably hot weather for some parts of the UK, the first weekend of August is set to bring a return to more typical summer conditions.
While a few showers will affect northern areas at times, most places can expect plenty of dry weather, sunny spells and temperatures much closer to average for the time of year.
Saturday: Dry and sunny for many
Saturday will see high pressure exerting its influence across much of the UK, helping to bring settled conditions to many areas. The exception will be across parts of Scotland, where a nearby area of low pressure will continue to feed showers in on a north-westerly wind. Some northern parts of England may also catch the odd light shower through the day.
For much of England and Wales, however, it will be a dry day with a good deal of sunshine. While there will be some cloud around, particularly in western areas, eastern parts of the country are likely to enjoy prolonged sunny spells.

Temperatures will be noticeably lower than earlier in the week, but this simply means a return to more comfortable conditions for many. Highs are expected to reach the mid-20s in the southeast, while northern areas will generally see temperatures in the high teens.
For those who found the recent heat challenging, the weekend's weather is likely to feel much more pleasant. Sunshine will remain strong, but temperatures will be far less extreme, making it a good weekend for outdoor activities.
Sunday: Fine and warm, with changes on the horizon
The settled theme continues into Sunday as high pressure remains the dominant feature across much of the UK. Any low pressure to the north retreats a little further away, allowing most areas to remain dry overnight and into the new day.
The brightest conditions will once again be found across England and Wales, with widespread sunshine expected through much of the day. A few showers may continue to affect the far north of Scotland and the Northern Isles, where winds are also expected to be stronger. Elsewhere, conditions should remain largely dry.
Cloud is expected to increase later in the day across southwestern parts of the UK, signalling a change in weather conditions approaching from the Atlantic. However, for most places, Sunday daylight hours should remain dry and bright.

Temperatures will be similar to Saturday. Northern areas are likely to see highs in the high teens or low 20s Celsius, while southern parts of the UK can expect temperatures in the mid-20s. UV levels will remain high wherever sunshine develops, so anyone spending extended periods outdoors should take appropriate precautions.
Looking ahead
While the weekend itself looks largely dry and settled, there are signs of more significant rainfall arriving during Sunday evening and into Monday. A developing area of low pressure is expected to move in from the southwest, bringing more persistent rain to some areas as the new week begins. There is the potential for this rain to linger, particularly across parts of eastern Scotland.
For now, though, the headline for the weekend is straightforward: plenty of sunshine, limited rainfall and temperatures that are much closer to average than many places have experienced recently.
