As we move from the end of July into the start of August, the UK’s weather continues to be shaped by the Azores High.
The Azores High remains positioned to the southwest of the country. While this high-pressure system brings some settled conditions, it also allows occasional frontal systems to sweep in from the west, leading to a mix of sunshine, showers and warm, humid air.
A damp and murky start to the week
Tuesday began on a damp and cloudy note, particularly across northwestern areas such as Northern Ireland, where low cloud and outbreaks of rain are expected. As the day progresses, this rain will gradually move south-eastwards, becoming lighter and more showery in nature. Eastern areas are likely to remain largely dry, with the best of the sunshine expected across northeastern Scotland and parts of the southeast. Cornwall should also see brighter conditions by the afternoon. Temperatures will be warm, with highs of 23 to 24°C in the south and near-average values further north.

Midweek warmth and humidity
By Wednesday, a ridge of high pressure builds from the west, bringing a generally brighter day for many, especially in western areas where cloud cover will be reduced. Eastern parts may still see some showers, particularly in the afternoon, while thicker cloud and light rain could edge into western Scotland and Northern Ireland later in the day. Temperatures will continue to rise, with highs around 25°C in the south, and conditions turning increasingly muggy.
Thunderstorm risk as humidity builds
Thursday sees the potential for more unsettled weather as a weak frontal system moves in from the west. Low cloud and showery outbreaks are likely in the morning, with some of these turning heavy as the day progresses. With heat and humidity building, there is also a chance of isolated thunderstorms developing, particularly in the south. Eastern areas are expected to remain largely dry and bright, with highs reaching 25 to 26°C. Northern Scotland may feel fresher later in the day.

A fresher end to the week
Friday brings a similar pattern, with the risk of heavy, possibly thundery showers in the southeast during the morning. These are expected to be isolated, with many areas enjoying a dry and bright afternoon. A more northerly flow will begin to take hold, helping to bring fresher conditions to Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England, while the south remains warm and humid.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Azores High continues to ridge in from the west, suggesting a dry and bright start to Saturday for many.
