Met Office weather: What's in store for the next week?

Author: Press Office

As we step into the first week of July, the UK is experiencing a striking contrast in weather conditions, with intense heat in the southeast and fresher, more changeable weather further northwest.

This pattern will evolve through the week, bringing a shift to more typical early summer conditions.

Tuesday begins with a mix of conditions across the UK. A band of cloud and patchy rain will stretch from southern Scotland through northern England into Wales. Some of this rain may become locally heavy, with a small chance of thunder, particularly in northwestern areas. Meanwhile, much of Northern Ireland and northern and western Scotland will enjoy a fine day with long sunny spells, a welcome change from recent unsettled weather.

The southeast of England will see the most notable conditions, with widespread sunshine and barely a cloud in the sky. Despite a slight influx of fresher air from the west, temperatures here are expected to rise even higher than on Monday. Highs of 34°C are likely, with 35°C or even 36°C possible in parts of Greater London, Kent, and East Sussex. While this heat arrives just after the end of June, it marks a sweltering start to July and could be the peak of this current hot spell.

Overnight, skies will remain mostly clear across central and southern England, although cloud will begin to increase from the northeast. Northern England and parts of southern and central Scotland may see further showery outbreaks, with a low chance of thunderstorms developing in the southeast later in the night. It will be another warm night in the southeast, though the warmth will become increasingly confined to the far southeast as fresher air begins to spread in.

Wednesday brings a noticeable change. A weather system will introduce wetter conditions to the southeast, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, some of which may turn heavy. There remains a low risk of thunder in the far southeast. Extensive low cloud and coastal mist will affect much of eastern Britain, gradually retreating to coastal areas through the day.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will start the day fine, but showers will develop, some of which may be heavy with a risk of thunder and hail, particularly in southeastern Scotland and northeastern England once early low cloud clears. The southwest of England is likely to remain mostly fine, with hazy sunshine and light winds.

As we move further into the week, the fresher air will become more widespread, bringing a return to more typical early July conditions. Temperatures will moderate across much of the UK, with a mix of sunshine and showers expected. While the southeast may hold onto some warmth for a little longer, the general trend is towards cooler nights and more comfortable daytime conditions.
