Week ahead forecast: Temperatures on the rise going into midweek

Author: Met Office

The UK continues its unsettled theme with a milder interlude this week

Conditions will vary notably between regions, with northwestern parts seeing the most persistent rain while central and southern areas enjoy occasional brighter spells.

Here’s an in‑depth look at what to expect over the coming days based on the latest forecast.

As Tuesday afternoon progresses, skies are expected to brighten from the south. This will bring a few sunny spells to southern parts of England, offering a more pleasant end to the day. Temperatures will be mild or even very mild for the time of year, with highs of 15-16°C, helped by a gentle southerly influence.

During the evening and overnight, rain will continue to affect western and northwestern regions, turning heavy at times across upland areas. Elsewhere, cloud dominates, though central, southern and southeastern England may see clearer skies later in the night. These breaks could allow isolated fog patches to form by dawn on Wednesday.

Mid‑week brings mild air and more mixed conditions

Wednesday begins with some mist, fog or low cloud across southeastern areas. These should gradually lift through the morning, giving way to sunny spells and a brighter start for many in the southeast. Elsewhere, cloud remains widespread with outbreaks of rain or drizzle, especially across northern and western parts. As the day unfolds, wetter conditions may edge further south-eastward, though rainfall amounts will vary.

Western Scotland in particular is likely to see more persistent and occasionally heavy rainfall, while northwestern regions could transition to more showery conditions later in the day. Winds will be light to moderate for most places, though coastal locations may feel occasional fresh or strong gusts.

Temperatures continue the mild theme, staying well above seasonal averages with highs of 17-18°C. The southeast could become exceptionally mild where sunshine develops, helped by light winds and clearer skies.

Late‑week outlook

Mild south-westerly winds, cloudy skies and intermittent rain across the northwest are expected to remain key features. Southern and southeastern parts are likely to stay drier overall with occasional sunshine but also potential for fog and low cloud at times.

Rainfall will continue to be most significant across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and southern and northwest England, where fronts brush close to the UK throughout the week. Brighter breaks may develop further south as cloud thins, though these will be variable. Mild or very mild temperatures are likely to persist, making for a noticeably warmer‑than‑average end to February.
