Weekend weather: sunshine at first, then a change from the northwest

Author: Met Office

The weekend begins on a fine and settled note for much of the UK, though it will feel cold first thing on Saturday morning.

Clear skies overnight will allow temperatures to dip close to, or below, freezing in a few prone spots, bringing a touch of frost. Some mist and fog patches are also likely to form, particularly in sheltered areas and across parts of eastern England. Visibility may be locally poor early on, but these fog patches should lift and clear as the sun rises.

Further north and northwest, particularly across Scotland, cloud will already be more extensive at the start of the weekend. Here, temperatures will hold up slightly better overnight thanks to thicker cloud cover, staying closer to mid‑single figures rather than dipping below zero.

Saturday: sunshine for many, cloudier in the north

Once early mist and fog clear on Saturday morning, many areas will enjoy a bright and pleasant day. Central and southern parts of the UK will see plenty of sunshine, making it feel warm by afternoon despite the chilly start. Light winds will add to the comfortable feel, making Saturday a good day for spending time outdoors.

Northern Ireland also looks set for a largely fine day, with sunny spells developing after any early low cloud clears. Across England and Wales, sunshine will be widespread, particularly through the afternoon, with temperatures climbing into the mid‑teens.

Northern and western Scotland will be the main exceptions. Here, cloud will be more persistent, with some patchy light rain at times. This rain is not expected to be heavy or widespread, but it will keep conditions cooler and duller compared with areas further south. Even so, there may be some brighter breaks, especially toward the northeast of Scotland, where cloud could thin at times.

Temperatures on Saturday afternoon will vary significantly depending on cloud cover. Under sunshine, values of 14 to 16°C are likely across much of England and Wales, while northern areas under cloud may stay closer to 9 to 12°C.

Saturday evening: signs of change

As Saturday evening approaches, high pressure begins to drift away toward mainland Europe. At the same time, a weather front starts to move in from the northwest. Behind this front, colder air follows, signalling a gradual shift toward more unsettled conditions.

Cloud will thicken across Scotland and Northern Ireland during the evening, with outbreaks of rain becoming more frequent. Winds will also start to strengthen, particularly across western Scotland, bringing a noticeably different feel compared with the calm conditions earlier in the day.

Further south, England and Wales remain largely dry through Saturday evening, with clear spells continuing for many.

Sunday: a tale of two halves

Sunday brings a clearer divide in conditions across the UK. After another chilly start across England and Wales, with frost possible once again in a few spots, any early fog or low cloud should lift during the morning. There will still be some sunshine to start the day, though skies will gradually turn hazier as cloud spreads southwards from the northwest.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will see the biggest change. Cloud will be extensive here, with outbreaks of rain becoming more frequent and persistent through the day. Western Scotland, including the Highlands and Islands, will be particularly affected, with blustery winds developing and showers feeding in from the northwest. Some of these showers may be heavy at times.

Further east across Scotland, rain will be patchier, but cloud will remain widespread. Even areas such as Fife and Aberdeenshire are likely to see some rain moving through at times during the day.

Southern areas stay drier for longer

Despite the increasing cloud, much of England and Wales stays dry through most of Sunday. Sunshine will be more limited than on Saturday, but there should still be some brighter intervals, especially earlier in the day and toward the southeast.

Temperatures on Sunday will be slightly lower overall compared with Saturday. Southern areas may still reach around 14°C, while northern England and Wales see values closer to 12°C. Across Scotland and Northern Ireland, temperatures will fall back further as colder air moves in behind the front, especially later in the day.

By the end of Sunday, a canopy of cloud will extend further south, hinting at a more unsettled start to the new week.

Looking ahead to next week

The changes arriving late in the weekend set the scene for a cooler, more changeable period early next week. Colder air moving in from the northwest will bring a greater mix of weather types, including showers and stronger winds, particularly in northern and western areas. In higher parts of Scotland, some showers may even turn wintry at times.

However, it is worth emphasising that this transition is a gradual one. Much of England and Wales will remain dry for a good part of the weekend, with the best of the sunshine coming on Saturday.
