Pollen forecast: Generally low levels continue across the UK

Author: Met Office

Pollen levels are expected to remain low across almost all parts of the UK over the next five days, providing good news for many hay fever sufferers.

Cooler air, more unsettled conditions and recent rainfall have helped keep allergen levels suppressed, with only one area showing any sign of a slight increase later in the forecast period.

Low pollen levels are forecast across all regions on both Thursday and Friday. This includes all areas of Scotland, from Orkney & Shetland and the Highlands & Eilean Siar to Grampian, Central, Tayside & Fife, Strathclyde and Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian & Borders. Low levels are also expected across Northern Ireland, northern England, the Midlands, Wales, eastern England, London and southeast England, and the southwest.

There is little change as we move into the weekend, with low pollen levels continuing nationwide. All regions across Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales are expected to remain in the low category. For most people sensitive to pollen, conditions should remain relatively favourable.

Low pollen levels are forecast to persist across almost the entire UK. Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, Wales, eastern England, London and southeast England, and the southwest all remain in the low category.

The only exception is Northern Ireland, where pollen levels are forecast to rise slightly to moderate by Sunday due to elevated levels of weed pollen. While this represents a small increase compared with recent days, levels remain well below the high values experienced earlier in the summer.

What are the different types of pollen?

If you're a hay fever sufferer, it helps to understand which type of pollen affects you and when it's likely to be in the air. The UK pollen season typically follows the above pattern, but the seasons can start earlier or run later depending on where you live in the UK and what the weather's doing.
