Following the exceptional heat of recent days, the UK’s weather settles into a more mixed and changeable pattern at the start of the week.
However, there are signs that warmer, more settled conditions will return as we head towards the weekend and into early next week.
Early week: fresher with rain in the north and west
Compared to the recent heatwave, conditions are notably fresher across the UK as we move into Tuesday. Low pressure moving in from the west will bring outbreaks of rain, particularly across Scotland, Northern Ireland and western parts of England and Wales.
At times, this rain may be heavy, with a risk of thunderstorms, bringing torrential downpours, gusty winds and occasional hail. These conditions will keep a more unsettled feel across northern and western areas.
Further south and east, it will be a different story. Much of eastern and southeastern England will remain largely dry, with sunny spells developing through the day. Temperatures here, while lower than last week’s peaks, will still feel warm in the sunshine, with highs reaching the mid-20s Celsius.
Through Tuesday night and into Wednesday, rain gradually clears eastwards, allowing a brief drier interlude for many areas.

Midweek: further rain followed by improving conditions
Wednesday begins on a largely dry note for much of the country, though cloud will increase across western areas. A new weather system then pushes in from the west, bringing heavy and persistent rain to Northern Ireland before spreading into Scotland and northwest England.
Further south and east, conditions remain mostly dry with some sunshine, although cloud may increase at times. Temperatures will be similar to Tuesday, with mid-20s Celsius in the southeast, and cooler conditions further northwest under cloud and rain.
This system clears eastwards overnight into Thursday, bringing a spell of rain to southeastern areas, though it will tend to fragment as it moves through.
By Thursday, brighter and drier weather returns for many, with sunshine developing across central and southern regions. Northern areas may hold onto more cloud, but most places will be dry. Temperatures will reach the mid-20s Celsius in the south, with cooler values further north.
Late week: high pressure builds
A ridge of high pressure strengthens from the southwest through Friday, bringing a more settled feel for much of the UK. While northern and northwestern areas may still see some cloud and occasional light rain, much of England and Wales will enjoy a largely fine day with sunshine and light winds.
Temperatures will respond to the increasing sunshine, with highs reaching around 26 to 27°C in southern areas.

Weekend and beyond: warmth returning
High pressure is expected to extend further across the UK during the weekend, bringing more widespread fine and settled weather. Most areas will see plenty of dry conditions and sunny spells, although northern regions could still see occasional fronts bringing cloud and some rain at times.
Temperatures are also expected to climb, with highs reaching the high 20s Celsius for some areas. There are increasing indications that temperatures may rise further into early next week, with the potential for another spell of hot weather developing.
At this stage, while another period of heat is possible, it is not expected to reach the exceptional levels or humidity experienced during the recent heatwave.
