The weather this weekend brings a bit of everything, as the UK moves away from recent chilly northerly winds and begins to draw in air from the Atlantic.
This change will make it feel slightly warmer overall, but low pressure still plays a role, meaning conditions will remain changeable. While there will be some sunshine at times, cloud and rain will also feature, particularly later in the weekend.
A chilly but brighter start on Saturday
Friday night into Saturday marks a transition to quieter conditions. Stronger winds that affected northern and eastern areas ease away, leading to a lighter breeze for many. However, it will be a cold start, especially in rural areas. Temperatures could dip below freezing in parts of northern UK, with patchy frost possible elsewhere in sheltered spots.
Despite the chilly morning, Saturday will start on a bright note for many, with spells of sunshine. Across northeast Scotland, a brisk breeze will keep conditions cooler, with a few showers continuing. Elsewhere, cloud is expected to build through the middle of the day, bringing scattered showers to parts of England and Wales. These showers are not expected to be as frequent or intense as some seen recently, and many places will stay dry for long periods.
Later in the afternoon, cloud and rain will begin to move in from the west. Northern Ireland will see the first of this wetter weather, with rain spreading into western Scotland through the afternoon. A fresher wind will also develop across western coasts and the Western Isles, bringing a more unsettled feel here. Further east, showers will be more hit-and-miss, with some brighter intervals developing as cloud breaks.
Maximum temperatures on Saturday afternoon will generally reach between 13 and 15°C. With lighter winds compared to recent days, it should feel fairly pleasant where sunshine appears.

Some showers and risk of occasional thunderstorms on Sunday
Saturday night into Sunday sees a weakening weather front edging eastwards. Overnight, temperatures will not fall as low as the previous night, though a touch of frost cannot be ruled out in a few sheltered spots.
Sunday morning will bring showery bursts of rain across parts of England, particularly central and eastern areas extending southwards. Rain will also edge north towards Orkney and Shetland, while a few showers develop in western areas. After a largely dry start in Northern Ireland, showers will arrive later in the morning and into the afternoon, spreading into western Scotland as well.
During Sunday afternoon, showers across central, southern and eastern England could become heavier and slow-moving in places. There is a risk of thunder and lightning here, adding some lively weather to end the weekend. Elsewhere, Wales and northern England may see a mix of brighter spells and scattered showers, while Northern Ireland and western Scotland are more likely to experience heavier bursts at times.
Temperatures on Sunday will be slightly higher than Saturday, with afternoon values generally reaching 14 or 15°C across northern and central areas, and up to around 17°C in parts of southern England. However, temperatures may briefly dip under heavier downpours.
Looking ahead to new week
As we move into the start of next week, the overall theme remains unsettled. While there are signs of a gradual warming trend, low pressure continues to influence the weather. This brings a risk of further rain or showers, and conditions may become windier, particularly into Tuesday and Wednesday.
