Summer 2015

The following represents an assessment of the weather experienced across the UK during Summer 2015 (June, July and August) and how it compares with the 1981 to 2010 average.

Summer 2015 was mostly characterized by a cool, westerly Atlantic flow with the UK often under the influence of low pressure systems; eastern areas tended to fare best for warmth and sunshine. The summer was both cooler and wetter than either of the two previous summers, although not exceptionally so. In June there was plenty of dry, settled and sunny weather in the south - albeit not especially warm - but it was more unsettled across Scotland. However, after a brief heat-wave on 1 July, both July and August were often cool, unsettled and with heavy rain at times.

Mean temperatures were below average for all three months; the UK anomalies were: June (-0.3 °C), July (-0.7 °C) and August (-0.2) °C. June and July were coolest relative to average across the north-west, whereas August was coolest across the south-west. However, temperatures were generally nearer normal across eastern England. There were some notably cold nights during mid to late July.

Summer rainfall totals were above average for most areas. June was drier than average for most of the UK except the far north-west, and it was especially dry in the London area and East Anglia. In contrast, western and northern Scotland, and Orkney in particular, were wetter than average. Most of the country was then wetter than average in both July and August, with approaching double the normal rainfall amount for parts of Scotland and East Anglia in July, and southern coastal counties in August. The UK rainfall anomalies were: June (77%), July (138%) and August (117%).

Summer sunshine totals were near average for the UK overall. June was a sunny month across the southern half of the UK with more than 120% of average sunshine amounts quite widely; however it was much duller across Scotland. July sunshine totals were mostly near normal but again it was rather dull in the north and west. August was a dull month across southern England, but brighter in the north-east.
