The bustling city of Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, and sits in the North Holland province. The city's rich history dates back to the 12th century with details of its original settlements suggesting that Amsterdam started off as a small fishing village. The city we see today is a world away from its village routes, evolving into one of the most influential trading destinations in the world.

Amsterdam is renowned for its incredible architecture and canals reminiscent of beautiful Venice. A popular part of the city amongst tourists is the Old Centre, which resembles a hive of activity no matter what the time of year, and is especially celebrated for its traditional and ornate cityscape.

Dam Square is a fantastic area to visit for shopping while taking in the picturesque canal views. Panning 200 metres from beginning to end, and filled with street artists, shops and museums, the Square is an ideal starting point from which to experience the full breadth of Amsterdam culture.

Amsterdam is a popular city to visit all year round with a range of different activities that span throughout the seasons. The climate in this region differs and is dependent on various seasonal factors. The city has a cool climate which is influenced by the breezes coming in from the North Sea.

At the height of winter, days in Amsterdam are generally short, and usually see around eight hours of daylight. Conditions can become very cold, and can make for uncomfortable sightseeing while wandering around the streets.

The music festival season runs from summer right through to the end of autumn, so there's plenty of opportunity to listen to world-famous dance sets in the summer sun. Amsterdam Open Air festival is always a huge success, and aims to show a true representation of Amsterdam nightlife - the festival is extremely versatile and showcases all types of electronic music.

July and August are the warmest months in Amsterdam, and on average the temperature reaches 22 °C. Summer is arguably the best season to visit for a relaxing break, as the hot sun and mild breezes are perfect weather conditions. Due to its geographical location close to the North Sea, the city can occasionally be quite windy; this is usually more prominent from September through to the November months.
