Dr Mayeul Destouches

Areas of expertise

  • Ensemble variational data assimilation
  • Convective scale data assimilation, especially for atmospheric water variables
  • Multilevel Monte-Carlo methods

Current activities

Mayeul is working on the development of the Met Office’s next generation data assimilation system, more precisely on aspects of forecast error covariance.

Career background

Mayeul defended his PhD in 2020 at CNRM, the research centre of Météo-France. His PhD was on accounting for rain and cloud variables in an ensemble variational assimilation system at kilometric scale. Following this, he pursued a 2-year postdoc at CERFACS in a more theoretical area, in which he assessed the potential of multilevel Monte-Carlo methods for variational ensemble data assimilation. Mayeul joined the Met Office in November 2022.
