Chilly, cloudy, wet and rather windy.

Today:

A chilly, cloudy and wet day with rain, heavy and persistent at times pushing across most parts through the morning and lasting for much of the day. It is going to be windy at times, especially around the coasts. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Tonight:

The rain should break up though the start of the night however it will remain mostly cloudy. Further heavy and persistent rain, with strong winds, will move in by dawn. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Sunday:

The heavy and persistent rain should clear away to the east by lunchtime leaving a much drier and birghter afternoon. It will be a blustery day. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

There should be a lot of fine weather early next week. Clear skies at night may lead to some rural frosts, however largely sunny days mean daytime temperatures should rise.

Updated: 02:34 on Sat 22 Sep 2018 BST

UK forecast for the next 5 days

Headline:

Rain in the south but staying mostly bright further north.

Today:

A fine but chilly start for most, with blustery showers for northern Scotland. Cloud and rain, heavy at times, will quickly spread across many southern and central parts where it will be chilly. Elsewhere it should stay generally bright.

Tonight:

Damp in the south with light rain/drizzle. Further showers for north and west Scotland. Heavier rain into Wales and southwest England later. Elsewhere clear spells mean rural frosts are possible.

Sunday:

Rather windy in the south with coastal gales and heavy, persistent rain moving eastwards, but turning brighter later. Bright spells further north, also some showers, could be heavy and thundery.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Turning much more settled and sunny early next week, however some rain and stronger winds are likely in the north by Wednesday. Becoming warmer by day but some overnight frosts.

Updated: 02:32 on Sat 22 Sep 2018 BST

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Thursday 27 Sep 2018 to Saturday 6 Oct 2018:

Through the remainder of September the weather should stay largely settled with long spells of sunshine and generally light winds. Northern and northwestern areas may be more changeable at times, with stronger winds and some outbreaks of rain, which may occasionally extend a little further east and south. Overnight, pockets of mist and fog are possible, especially in the south although it should remain mostly dry here. By day it will be warm for many, but some nights will be chilly with patchy frost possible. Into early October, many areas are likely to remain mostly settled, but it is likely to turn generally colder. Southern parts are likely to see the driest weather, but some wet and windy weather is possible in the north.

UK Outlook for Sunday 7 Oct 2018 to Sunday 21 Oct 2018:

Generally settled and drier conditions are likely to dominate across many parts of the UK during the beginning of this period, particularly across the south. This should bring a good deal of sunshine with any wet and windy weather, likely to be mostly confined to the north. Long nights will lead to a greater chance of fog and patchy frost, but the days will often be mild. Towards the middle of the month, there is considerable uncertainty in the forecast, with the chance that it may turn more unsettled across all parts, although this is most likely to be across the north.
