Regional forecast for London & South East England

Today:

Frosty start, especially across western counties, with a risk of icy stretches on untreated surfaces. Then largely dry and sunny, but staying cold, although cloud will increase this afternoon across western areas. Maximum Temperature 3 °C.

Tonight:

Dry at first, with temperatures quickly falling and a frost developing. Overnight milder conditions, with outbreaks of rain and coastal gales, will arrive, although icy stretches may initially temporarily form. Minimum Temperature -1 °C.

Wednesday:

Residual cloud and rain soon clearing Kent, then sunny intervals before showers or longer spells of rain arrive. These will be sometimes heavy, clearing late afternoon. Chance of coastal gales. Maximum Temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Windier for Thursday and Friday with sunshine and scattered showers, but mainly dry and fine with sunny spells for Saturday and lighter winds. Rather cold or cold with overnight frosts.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
