Early rain clearing to brighter spells. Cloud, rain returning later.

Today:

Windy with overnight rain soon clearing south. Brighter or sunny spells then follow. Cloud thickening again across the Pennines, however, with outbreaks of mainly light rain or drizzle turning persistent for some. These spreading to all parts later. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Tonight:

Winds easing a little, but still rather breezy overnight. Staying rather cloudy, with further outbreaks of rain or drizzle. These most likely across the Pennines with hill fog. Minimum temperature 5 °C.

Thursday:

Mainly dry but rather cloudy with limited brighter spells in the east. Thicker cloud likely in the west with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, along with some hill fog. Breezy. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Little change Friday and Saturday. The best of any sunshine in the east, western parts cloudier with outbreaks of drizzle. Less breezy Sunday, with all parts dry with brighter spells.

Mostly fine with sunny spells on Monday, although cloudier in the northwest with some rain. Light or moderate winds for most, becoming stronger in the northwest, with a risk of coastal gales. From Tuesday, high pressure tends to dominate, with any frontal systems most active in the northwest, but quickly weakening as they stagger southeast across the UK. For many, there should be plenty of mostly dry if rather cold weather, likely lasting a few days, with overnight frost and perhaps some fog patches in the south and a small chance of very cold conditions and snow showers moving in from the east. However, most likely is a resumption of wetter, windier and milder weather from the west after a few days of cold conditions.
