This is the average number of seconds between one wave and the next, 1-2 miles out to sea. A long wave period (more than 10 seconds) means the waves at the beach may be more powerful. Lifeguards can give you advice on waves if you’re planning to go into the water.

The arrow shows the average direction of the waves 1-2 miles out to sea. It indicates how sheltered the beach will be from these waves. If the arrow points towards land, most of the waves’ power will reach the beach. If the arrow is parallel to or pointing away from land, the wave height is likely to be lower on the beach than it is offshore.

Today:
Bright, but for many rather cloudier than recently, the best of any sunshine across Skye and Lochaber, with, especially across Lewis, Caithness and Sutherland, a few showers, these wintry on hills. Northeasterly breeze easing but remaining rather cool. Maximum temperature 11 °C.
Tonight:
A few showers continue this evening and overnight across Caithness, Sutherland and the Outer Hebrides. Some long clear spells develop across Lochaber, and with light winds, a touch of frost. Minimum temperature 0 °C.
Friday:
Another bright, but often rather cloudy, day with showers across the north developing a little more widely through the day. Mainly light winds. Maximum temperature 11 °C.
Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
Rather cloudy with showers this weekend, perhaps some more persistent rain for Caithness on Sunday. Cloudy Monday with showers or longer spells of rain and strengthening southerly winds.

The weekend's rain probably clearing east and northeast to leave a drier day on Monday, although the chance of showers and even thunderstorms remains. Cloudier, wetter weather is likely to quickly arrive into the west, and slide east across southern areas early next week, such that the majority of the week will be characterised by wetter weather in southern UK, drier weather in northern, especially northwestern UK, and a chance of rain or even thundery showers for a time in the east. Temperatures likely to trend upwards, with the chance of a warm to very warm spell in some southern and eastern parts, before conditions probably turn drier, cooler and more settled from the west towards the end of the period.

In this period, the chances of unsettled weather are slightly less than usual in the north and about the same as usual further south. Therefore, some spells of wetter weather are likely for all, but perhaps especially southern areas with the driest conditions probably further north. Temperatures probably near average though with some cooler interludes possible. Also worth noting that average temperatures themselves rise by around 1C per week at this time of year.
