Headline:

Early rain easing, but remaining rather cloudy.

Today:

Extensively cloudy to start, with periods of rain interspersed with heavier bursts. This rain should clear eastwards during the morning, but will leave a legacy of low cloud and perhaps the odd spot of drizzle later. Warm in the south. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Tonight:

Cloudy and damp overnight, with a little light rain or drizzle possible from thicker cloud. Winds mainly light, but gradually becoming breezier by dawn. Minimum temperature 8 °C.

Tuesday:

A damp start, and generally rather cloudy again, but drier with limited bright intervals developing later. Heavier rain perhaps then reaching the south late on. Winds strengthening but rather warm. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Wet and windy on Wednesday. Drier and brighter but cooler conditions should then spread from the west on Thursday. Friday perhaps starting fine, but becoming wet and windy again later.

The unsettled spell of weather, which is expected to develop during this coming week, will continue into next weekend and beyond. All regions are likely to have some rain at times, which could be heavy. However, most of the rain, showers and strong winds are likely to be in the northwest with southeastern areas more often dry and bright. Temperatures will be above average and probably feeling warm in the brighter spells in southern areas. Later in October, there is a chance of more settled conditions developing, particularly in southern and eastern areas but with temperatures falling closer to average and some overnight frost and fog. Given the time of year, fog could be slow to clear.

Potentially some wet and windy weather at first, especially in the northwest, but a trend towards more settled conditions is most favoured for late October as high pressure becomes increasingly dominant. This would bring the potential for frost and fog at night, and possibly large variations between daytime and overnight temperatures. Into early November, high pressure may become more centred to the northwest of the UK, resulting in a gradual trend towards more unsettled conditions, particularly across southern regions.
