Today:

A dull and misty morning with occasional light rain or drizzle and perhaps some fog patches. Turning mainly dry from around noon, with a chance of some limited brighter spells breaking through during the afternoon, particularly across Shetland. Fresh winds. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Tonight:

Rather cloudy but mainly dry. However some fleeting clear spells crossing on the fresh to strong west to southwest winds, and also the odd drizzly shower may crop up. Minimum temperature 4 °C.

Thursday:

Cloudy and generally dry by day, with strong west to southwest winds touching gale force at times over Shetland. Cloud thickening overnight, heralding a rainband that reaches Shetland towards dawn. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Friday cloudy with patchy rain. Rainband crossing from north late Friday, clearing to cold, showery wintry northerly into Saturday. Turning drier, brighter, milder Sunday as winds back westerly.

UK long range weather forecast

Sunday will be on the chilly side, with a good deal of dry and sunny weather, but there will also be a few showers in places from time to time. Next week will be off to a chilly but mainly fine start on Monday, though it will gradually become more changeable through the week. There will be rain and strong winds at times, mainly in the northwest of the UK, where gales are likely. Some rain is possible in the south too, but there will be more in the way of dry weather. The unsettled weather is likely to continue into mid April. It is likely to be fairly cold through the period, with some overnight frost possible, but feeling a little warmer in the afternoon in any sunny spells.

At the start of this period it looks most likely that we will see changeable conditions as spells of wet and windy weather move southeastwards across the UK. The most unsettled conditions are likely to be in the northwest, with more settled weather across southeastern areas. Temperatures should be near average for most. Towards the middle of the month confidence in the forecast is low; however there is a possibility that we may see a return of more widely settled and drier weather. Some wetter interludes are still possible, particularly in the northwest. It could well turn warm at times, particularly in the south.
